Picture this. You're reading a short report about rising crime in a city you've never heard of. Same numbers, same layout, same ending.
Only one word changes in the opening line. Crime is a beast ravaging the city or crime is a virus infecting the city. Would that single metaphor really nudge what you think should be done? Not just your opinion, but the kind of facts you go looking for next?
That's the bet Paul Thibodeau and Lera Boroditsky took. Not a bet that language is flowery or persuasive in the usual way, but that metaphors act like cognitive costumes. Put one on, and a whole repertoire of moves becomes natural.
A beast invites hunting, catching, caging. A virus invites diagnosis, treatment, prevention. The question wasn't whether metaphors decorate our talk about crime.
It was whether they can quietly reorganize reasoning itself—what you count as a sensible diagnosis, what you reach for as a remedy, and even what information you think you need to make up your mind.
They ran five experiments to watch this happen under controlled conditions. The setup was simple: a short paragraph about crime in a fictional city, Addison, and a few questions afterward. Sometimes the metaphor was threaded through the text.
Sometimes it was just a single noun in the first sentence. In one case, the metaphor wasn't in the text at all—people were primed to think of beast or virus by a brief, unrelated task and then received a neutral crime report. Later studies added a twist: instead of asking for solutions, they asked people to pick which topic they wanted to investigate next—education, the local economy, police force size, or prisons.
All of this was run with care: an initial campus sample of four hundred eighty-five students, then several hundred more participants recruited online; consent, anonymity, and institutional review board oversight; and responses coded by two independent raters who didn't know which metaphor each person had seen.
Start with what happened when the metaphor was right there in the prose. In their first experiment, when the crime problem was dressed in beast language, people steered toward enforcement—more policing, tougher sentencing. When the same problem was framed as a virus, more people drifted toward reform—figure out root causes, shore up schools, invest in prevention.
The shift was not subtle. Seventy-four percent of readers in the beast condition argued for enforcement; that number dropped to 56 percent under the virus frame. The report also contained crime statistics, and here's the wild part: almost no one said the metaphor mattered. People pointed to the numbers instead as what had influenced them most.
Compress the metaphor down to a single word and the pattern held. In a second study, that lone seed—beast versus virus—again pushed people's solutions in different directions. Enforcement took the lead among beast readers at 71 percent, compared to 54 percent after the virus frame.
If you're thinking, maybe that's because "police" means different things to different people, they checked that. When the researchers asked participants to clarify what they meant, whether police were deterrents or punishers, the metaphor still tilted the room. And a striking subset—about a third—said, simply, increase the police force and left it at that. The single word had already done its work.
But is this just word association? See "beast," think "hunt"? To rule that out, Thibodeau and Boroditsky tried a clean dissociation in their third experiment.
Before reading a crime report with no metaphor at all—no beast, no virus—people did a quick synonym task for one of those words. If raw lexical priming were driving the effect, that gentle nudge should have been enough. It wasn't.
The rates of enforcement recommendations were virtually identical across the two primes—64 percent after the beast prime versus 65 percent after the virus prime. Without the frame integrated into the narrative, the pull vanished. A word by itself didn't do it; a metaphor in context did.
The later studies asked a different question: not what solution you endorse, but what information you think you need next. That matters because in the real world, you don't jump straight from reading a report to voting on a policy. You go search for data, and those foraging choices can lock you into a line of reasoning before you've even noticed.
In the fourth experiment, participants finished the crime report and had to choose one thing to investigate—education, the economy, police, or prisons. Put the metaphor at the beginning of the report and you get the same gravitational pull as before, now on curiosity itself. People who read the beast frame were far more likely to click into the criminal justice machinery—police or prisons—than those who got the virus frame: 40 percent versus 22 percent.
And, once again, when asked what influenced them, most people waved at the statistics. Only a small minority pointed to the metaphor.
Timing turned out to be its own lever. In the fifth study, the researchers took the very same paragraph and moved the metaphor to the end. Suddenly the effect on information foraging evaporated.
Overall, people favored the reform topics—education or the economy—by a two to one margin, 67 percent to 33 percent, but whether they had just read "beast" or "virus" didn't budge that choice. A regression comparing those last two studies flagged a clear interaction: when the frame was integrated as people built their mental model, it steered the questions they asked; when it arrived late, it didn't. It's not just recency.
It's whether the metaphor is part of the scaffolding you use to make sense of the situation.
One feature of this whole program is almost eerie. The effect is strong. It's also covert.
In the first study, only a tiny sliver of people—about three percent—said the metaphor had influenced them. In the online samples, that rose a little but stayed low: roughly seven percent in one, ten to fifteen percent in the others. People rationalized their choices by pointing to the numbers they'd read, even when those numbers were identical across conditions. The language felt like packaging. It was actually architecture.
If you're mentally reaching for political labels right now, that's exactly where Thibodeau and Boroditsky went next. The metaphor effect, they found, was big enough to rival—sometimes exceed—differences you get from party identification or demographics. Across studies that used the in-text frame, the shift in enforcement recommendations ran on the order of 18 to 22 percentage points.
Stack that against the gap between Democrats and Republicans in the same samples and the metaphor effect was nearly 90 percent larger. In models that included gender and party, the frame reliably predicted what people proposed to do; the usual suspects often did not.
They also looked at congruence—how often a person's suggestion aligned with the frame they'd just read. In the single word study, about six in ten responses lined up with the metaphor. Under the stripped-down synonym prime, congruence dropped to about half, which tells the same story from a different angle.
It's not background associations with beast or virus doing the work; it's the way a live metaphor shapes how the narrative is understood. There was a mild political wrinkle here: Democrats and Independents showed higher metaphor congruence than Republicans—63 percent versus 49 percent—but the key takeaway held across groups. Put a coherent frame into the message and you tilt the problem-solving space.
Let's pull the logic thread through. First, when the metaphor lives in the narrative, even as a single word, people's solutions shift in a frame-consistent way: beasts get cops and cages; viruses get diagnosis and prevention. Second, it's not mere priming.
A disconnected word flicker doesn't move recommendations; a frame knitted into the story does. Third, the frame doesn't just shape answers, it shapes questions. People go looking for evidence that fits the schema they were just handed, and once they start down that path, they keep going.
Fourth, the window is temporal. You have to give the frame to the mind when it's assembling its model of the situation. Tuck it in after the model is built and you've missed your chance.
One last methodological note, because it matters for trust. The researchers weren't just eyeballing free responses and sorting them by feel. Two independent coders, blind to condition, categorized the answers with high agreement.
They omitted the small fraction of responses that didn't contain a clear suggestion, and they checked that people weren't simply mixing categories in a way that disguised the effect. The patterns you're hearing about held up after those checks.
So what do we do with this? On one level, it's a cautionary tale about how easily our sense of "just following the data" can be bent by a frame we don't even register. On another level, it's a practical insight for anyone crafting public-facing science or policy communication.
If you want people to investigate root causes and prevention, don't lead with a predator. If you want focus on immediate enforcement, don't seed the mind with contagion. That isn't spin in the pejorative sense.
It's a recognition that understanding is built on metaphors and that those metaphors quietly specify what counts as a good question and a plausible answer.
You might worry this is manipulation, pure and simple. But consider the alternative: pretending that neutral language is a thing. Thibodeau and Boroditsky's work says it isn't.
Every narrative comes with a scaffold. The responsible move, then, is twofold. Be transparent about the frame you're using.
And, maybe more importantly, design decision processes that deliberately pull people across frames—ask for both enforcement and reform ideas, and prompt searches for both kinds of evidence—so that the first metaphor in the room doesn't get to be the only architect.
In the end, the headline isn't that words are powerful. It's that the smallest, most forgettable word in the room can become a blueprint for how we think. And once that blueprint is in place, we don't even see the beams. We just feel, with great confidence, that the numbers told us what to do.
